The Broken at Casey Weir
Casey Weir holds a pool on the Broken River downstream of Benalla in north-east Victoria, where the river winds between red gums across the plains toward Shepparton. Species and seasons
Murray cod and golden perch are the fish of the Broken River at Casey Weir, the cod in the snags of the weir pool, the yellowbelly in the warm months; redfin and carp are common. The Broken is north of the Great Dividing Range and not on the VFA’s exempt list, so the Murray cod closed season, 1 September to 30 November, applies; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The public access around the weir pool and the reserves toward Benalla give bank access, and a kayak covers the pool. Check the closed waters around the weir structure before fishing close to it.
Planning a visit
Benalla, a short drive upstream, has supplies, tackle and accommodation. Bring cod lures and bait for yellowbelly, and a kayak for the snags.
The river through the year
Lake Nillahcootie upstream regulates the Broken, and Casey Weir diverts water into Broken Creek, so the level here follows releases and diversions as well as rain. Cod feed through summer and autumn. Golden perch are most active in the warmest months on rising water, and the weir pool holds water when the river below it runs low. In the summer heat the early mornings are best, and in winter the fishing slows right down. The pool is a quiet spot with shade from the red gums.
