The reach
The Glenelg at Casterton is the middle river between Rocklands Reservoir and the estuary at Nelson, running through the Kelpie town’s river parks and under the Glenelg Highway bridge over deep pools, sand and red gums toward Dartmoor and the lower river’s limestone gorge. It is a mixed fishery of natives and trout, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Casterton supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page. The estuary at Nelson has its own page.
Species and seasons
Murray cod, stocked into the Glenelg, fish the snags and the deep pools through summer and autumn, and the Glenelg is not in the Wimmera basin, so the VFA’s September to November closure applies here and the species card computes it; golden perch fish the same water from spring to autumn; redfin are the numbers fish; brown trout, stocked, fish the cool months; estuary perch reach up from the lower river; and carp are present under the VFA rules.
Where to fish it
The river parks and the bridge give bank access at the town, and a kayak covers the pools upstream toward Harrow and downstream toward Dartmoor; the deep pools and the timber are the cod and perch water, the runs fish for trout at dawn in the cool months. The lower river gorge toward Nelson is canoe water.
