The lake
Rocklands Reservoir holds the Glenelg River on the southern edge of the Grampians near Balmoral, a big, sprawling GWMWater storage of drowned timber, islands and long arms that supplies the Wimmera-Mallee pipeline, with camping, ramps and a caravan park along its shores and a level that the dry years have pulled down for long stretches. It sits in the Wimmera basin, where the VFA does not apply the cod closure, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge on the reservoir supplies the level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Murray cod are stocked and are open all year, because the VFA exempts the waters of the Wimmera basin from the September to November closure; the chip on the species card reads open all year with the rule linked. Golden perch fish the timber and the points from spring to autumn; redfin are abundant and the winter fish; brown and rainbow trout are stocked and fish the cool months along the edges; and carp are present with the VFA rules. The Glenelg below the dam is its own trout and perch water.
Where to fish it
The caravan park and the camps on the eastern shore and the ramps at the dam end are the access, and the drowned timber in the arms toward the inflow is the cod and perch water, a boat or kayak fishery; the deeper water near the wall holds the fish in a low year, and the islands give sheltered water when the wind is up.
