Walleye fisheries live and die by recruitment: the lakes here either sustain massive natural reproduction (Erie's reef hatches, Winnebago's river runs) or pair huge forage bases with smart management. The result is the same on your line: fisheries where a limit of eaters is the baseline expectation and a 30-inch fish is a realistic season goal, not a lifetime one.
Spring runs concentrate fish in rivers and on reefs (April-May almost everywhere). Summer scatters them to mud flats, thermoclines and wind-blown structure: trolling season. Fall regroups them on steep breaks feeding for winter: the trophy window. And winter turns half of these lakes into ice cities. Lake Erie by population maths: recent hatches built the largest walleye biomass ever measured there. Lake of the Woods and Mille Lacs both also claim the title culturally: and on a given week, either can outfish Erie.
Several: Oneida's shorelines, the Missouri River tailraces below Oahe and Sakakawea, and Winnebago's river runs all produce from the bank in season. The daily reports flag when fish push shallow.
