A walleye recovery

Walleye in southern Green Bay were decimated in the early to mid-1900s by habitat loss, pollution, invasive species and overharvest. After water quality improved in the early 1970s, Wisconsin DNR stocked fry and fingerlings, and the program re-established a naturally reproducing population so well that stocking stopped in 1984 throughout southern Green Bay and its tributaries, except Sturgeon Bay, where it ended in 2012.

Large fish and rising pressure

In WDNR's 2024 spring electrofishing, 11.4 to 24.2 percent of female walleye in the four surveyed rivers measured at least 26 inches, and walleye 17 years or older turned up at every spawning site. WDNR also reports rising angler effort and harvest and some anglers' concern for the fishery; a reward-tag study begun in 2024 will run through at least 2026 to measure exploitation.

Whitefish and perch

Strong recruitment has grown Green Bay's lake whitefish stock, and a large winter sport ice fishery for whitefish began in 2007. The Green Bay quota, about 2.28 million pounds, is split evenly between commercial and sport fishing. Yellow perch in Wisconsin waters of the bay have had a 15-fish daily bag and a May 20 to March 15 season since 2006.
