The Elk at Fernie
The Elk River runs through the Elk Valley in the southeastern corner of British Columbia, past Elkford, Sparwood and the ski town of Fernie, to Lake Koocanusa, with the Rocky Mountains on both sides. It is one of the best-known westslope cutthroat trout rivers in the country, fished on the dry fly from drift boats in summer. Species and seasons
Westslope cutthroat trout are the fish, rising to hatches from early summer into fall; bull trout and mountain whitefish also live in the river. Much of the cutthroat fishing is catch-and-release by regulation, and the river has special rules set out in the synopsis. The cutthroat rise to big stoneflies and hoppers in summer and to small mayflies in the fall.
Where to fish it
The river above and below Fernie is floated in drift boats and rafts, and waded where access allows; the tributaries such as the Wigwam and the Bull are fished too. Local guides run the float trips. Below Fernie the river slows toward Elko and the reservoir; above it, toward Sparwood and Elkford, the river is smaller and colder.
Planning a visit
Fernie is on Highway 3, about three hours from Calgary. The river is high and coloured with snowmelt into early summer; the fishing season really starts when it clears.

Snowmelt runoff dominates from May into July; late summer and early fall bring low, clear water and the best dry-fly fishing; winter is cold and the river is quiet.
