Sylvan Lake
Sylvan Lake is a long, clear lake in the parkland west of Red Deer, with the town of Sylvan Lake, its beach and its marina at the southeastern end, and Jarvis Bay Provincial Park on the eastern shore. It has been central Alberta’s summer resort lake for more than a century, and it is fished from boats in summer and through the ice in winter. Species and seasons
Northern pike are the most common catch, along the weed lines and in the shallow bays; walleye, yellow perch and lake whitefish round out the lake, and whitefish are a winter favourite through the ice. Where to fish it
Boats launch from the town marina and the public launches around the shore and work the drop-offs and weed edges; the long piers in town are a shore option in open water. In winter, the ice-fishing camps set up off the town and along the shoreline.
Planning a visit
The town is about twenty minutes from Red Deer and under two hours from both Calgary and Edmonton on Highway 2 and Highway 11. On summer weekends the lake fills with boats, paddleboards and swimmers, and the calm early mornings are the best time to fish.
Winter on the lake
The lake usually freezes from late November or December into April, and winter brings ice fishing for pike, perch and whitefish. No agency measures or certifies the ice; spring-fed areas and the lake’s outlet can stay thin, so check the ice yourself and follow local advice.
