Pigeon Lake
Pigeon Lake is a large, shallow lake about an hour southwest of Edmonton, ringed by summer villages and cottages and with a provincial park on its western shore. It is one of the most fished lakes in central Alberta, in summer and through the ice in winter. Species and seasons
Walleye, northern pike and yellow perch are the fish, with lake whitefish; the lake is fished through the ice in winter. Walleye limits on Pigeon Lake are set by the Alberta guide and can be restrictive, with harvest sometimes allowed only through a special licence.
Where to fish it
The provincial park on the west shore and the launches around the lake give access; in winter, the ice-fishing areas off the park and the villages are popular. The lake is shallow, and the weed beds hold the pike and perch. Mulhurst Bay on the north shore and the villages along the east side are other common access points.
Planning a visit
Pigeon Lake is about an hour from Edmonton. In late summer, Alberta Health Services often issues blue-green algae advisories for the lake; check before swimming or eating fish from affected areas.
Ice and seasons
The lake freezes from late fall and is fished through the ice into March; no agency certifies the ice, and pressure ridges form on large lakes. Open water brings the walleye season in spring after the spawn. Late-season ice on big lakes turns soft and grey near shore first.
