The Miramichi, the Restigouche and the Saint John drain the forests of the interior; salmon and brook trout are the fish of the rivers, and striped bass come into the Miramichi estuary in spring.
The province sells a salmon licence and a licence for all other species, each listed as a base fee plus fixed fees before HST; non-residents angling for salmon must be accompanied by a licensed guide. Salmon retention rules are set by Fisheries and Oceans Canada and change from year to year.
The gauge shows whether there is water to move the salmon: a rise after rain is what anglers wait for, and warm, low summers can bring closures to protect the fish.
