The Miramichi River
The Miramichi is New Brunswick’s great salmon river, a system of branches, the Southwest and Northwest Miramichi among them, that drain the forests of the province’s interior to the estuary at the city of Miramichi and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. It is famous for Atlantic salmon fishing with the fly, and for a spring run of striped bass in the estuary. Species and seasons
Atlantic salmon run from early summer into fall, fished only with the fly, with retention and hook-and-release rules set by Fisheries and Oceans Canada; brook trout live in the branches and tributaries; striped bass run into the estuary in spring. The salmon rules change from year to year.
Where to fish it
The Southwest Miramichi around Doaktown, Boiestown and Blackville is the classic salmon water, fished from the pools; much of the river is private or leased water, with public and Crown reserve stretches. The estuary below Miramichi city is the striped bass water.
Planning a visit
Doaktown, home of the Atlantic Salmon Museum, is the heart of the salmon country, about ninety minutes from Fredericton. Non-residents angling for salmon in New Brunswick must be accompanied by a licensed guide.
