The Delta game

The California Delta is a bass factory wearing an estuary costume: tidal tules and grass where frogging for double-digit largemouth defines summer, punching mats decides tournaments, and striped bass run the channels spring and fall. Tide beats time of day: plan every trip around the moving water.

Tides before tactics

Delta fishing is tide-table fishing: outgoing water positions bass on tule points and weed edges; incoming spreads them; slack kills it. Plan around the moving hours (our coastal-style windows apply) and the thousand-mile maze simplifies to edges with current.

Seasonal shape

Spring: big females in the flooded shallows: swim jigs and Senkos. Summer: the famous frog bite over hydrilla and the punching game underneath. Fall: shad balls draw everything: fish the roaming schools. Winter: deep, slow jigs on steep banks: the trophy stripers arrive with the sleet.

Tide-book bass fishing

Delta bass fishing runs on the tide book: outgoing water pulls crawfish and shad from the tule banks and positions largemouth on every drain and point: the last two hours of the fall are the golden window. Punch the hyacinth mats at high slack, throw swim jigs down the tule lines as it drops, and follow the clean-water seams the tides rearrange daily. Same spots, opposite results, six hours apart.
