Front range flatwater

Boyd Lake stretches 1,700 surface acres along Loveland’s eastern edge: a state-park reservoir with the Front Range for a backdrop and a straightforward warm-water fishery in front of it. Walleye headline: spring jig bites on the riprap and points: with white bass schooling all summer, wipers that crash bait when the wind blows, largemouth and smallmouth along the rocky west shore, and crappie plus bluegill filling the coves for the family fleet.

The walleye rhythm

March-May, fish the dam riprap and northwest points at dusk with jigs and jerkbaits as spawners stage: the year’s best window. Summer sends fish to the 15-25-foot flats: bottom bouncers and crawler harnesses trolled slow, or slip-bobbers on the humps at dawn. Fall reruns the rock bite in miniature. The lake gets pounded: fish the edges of the pressure: weekdays, dawn, chop.
