The engineered classic

Candlewood was flooded in 1928 as pumped-storage for the Housatonic, and its drowned hills became Connecticut's premier fishery: 5,400 acres of rocky points, islands and deep cold water forty minutes from anywhere in Fairfield County. The bass fishing carries a national quiet reputation: tournament weights here match famous southern water, in a lake most of the country cannot place on a map.

Two stories, one lake

The upper story runs warm-water classic: smallmouth wolfpacks on the rockpiles and shoals (Ned rigs and jerkbaits at 10-25 ft), largemouth in the coves' docks and grass. The lower story stays cold enough for trout: the state stocks browns and rainbows that hold the 30-50-ft band all summer, trolled with leadcore or jigged at marks. Few lakes this far south run both programs this well.

The alewife engine

Landlocked alewives drive everything: bass suspend off structure to intercept the bait clouds (electronics finds the schools mid-lake), and winter's alewife die-offs pull browns shallow at dawn for casters throwing spoons off the points. Match-the-bait whites and silvers out-fish everything most of the year.

Seasons and the drawdown

Winter drawdowns (the lake drops several feet) expose the structure map: photograph it. Ice fishing is legitimate in cold years: perch, trout and bass through the hard water of the bays.
