New Mexico has the best-named regulations in the country. Its special trout waters are colour-coded as Red Chile, Green Chile and Xmas Chile, and once you know what the three mean you can read a sign at a river and know exactly what you may do.
Every season we have verified in New Mexico
One block per rule, because a single species can be on two calendars in the same state depending on the water. The band under each heading is the legal season; the row under it is what our own data says the fish are doing.
Trout — Statewide default
No statewide closed season. Two lake trout and two cutthroat are the most that can be included in the five. Named waters cut it further: four at Tingley Beach, three at Laguna del Campo, the Red River ponds and the Rio Grande between Elephant Butte and Caballo.

- 5 a day, 10 in possession, for brown, brook, rainbow and Gila trout and kokanee salmon combined.
Trout — Special Trout Waters
Three designations, and the names do the work. Red Chile Water is catch-and-release with tackle restrictions. Green Chile Water allows two trout a day with tackle restrictions. Xmas Chile Water allows two trout a day with any legal tackle. They are managed for different things — trophy size, native trout conservation, population structure — and the colour tells you which bargain you are being offered.
Trout — Winter Trout Waters
From November 1 to March 31, when water temperatures are cool enough, a set of waters is stocked with hatchery rainbow specifically for the winter. New Mexico does not close its trout season in winter; it moves the fish to where people can reach them.

What the water is doing while the season is open
This is the part an agency page will not tell you. The temperature row above is the seasonal curve we use for the 4 of 13 New Mexico waters we track on a trout river profile, and it is why an opening date and a fishable date are not the same thing. A season that opens while the water is still in the forties is a legal invitation, not a biological one: the fish are there, they are just not eating on your schedule yet. Cross the legal band against the activity row before you book the day off.
