A canyon reservoir on the plains

Conchas Lake spreads across the junction of the Canadian and Conchas rivers in northeastern New Mexico, a Corps reservoir in red rock canyon country with 60 miles of shoreline at full pool. Levels swing widely with drought. The fishery is warm-water: largemouth and smallmouth bass, walleye, white bass, crappie and catfish, in water that runs clear over rock when the lake is stable.

Bass and walleye

Largemouth hold the rocky shorelines, coves and any flooded brush: spinnerbaits, jigs and soft plastics through the seasons. Smallmouth work the rockier main-lake structure. Walleye hold the points and flats, taking jigs and crawler harnesses in the classic depths. Spring and fall are the strongest windows; summer heat pushes fish deep and anglers to dawn.

White bass and cats

White bass school over the open water and run the river arms in spring, providing fast action on small jigs and spoons. Crappie hold whatever brush exists at the current level. Channel catfish are abundant and reliable from the bank on cut bait. The lake’s level dictates which patterns work: check current elevation before planning.

Northeastern New Mexico logistics

Conchas Lake State Park operates ramps, campgrounds and a marina on both the north and south sides. Tucumcari is 30 miles southeast with full services; the immediate area is sparsely populated.
