A lake in painted country

Abiquiu Lake covers about 4,000 acres at full pool on the Rio Chama in northern New Mexico, held by a Corps dam in the red rock country Georgia O’Keeffe made famous. Levels vary with irrigation and flood-control operations. The fishery is mixed: walleye, smallmouth and largemouth bass, crappie, catfish and, in the cool months, stocked trout.

Walleye and bass

Walleye hold the rocky points and deeper structure, taking jigs and trolled harnesses at low light. Smallmouth work the rock and the steep shorelines, with the clear water favoring finesse presentations. Largemouth relate to the few brushy areas and the upper end where the Chama comes in. Spring and fall are the productive windows.

Trout and the river

New Mexico stocks trout in the cool months, adding shoreline fishing near the ramps and dam. Below Abiquiu Dam, the Rio Chama runs as a tailwater with trout, and above the lake the Chama through the wilderness offers one of the state’s better float-fishing trips. Three fisheries in one valley, all within a short drive.

Rio Arriba logistics

The Corps operates ramps, camping and day-use areas at the lake, with Abiquiu village and Española providing services. Wind funnels through the canyon country most afternoons.
