Why New York is different

That structure is unusual. Most northern states close walleye from late winter through the spring; New York keeps the hard-water season open until March 15 and reopens on May 1. Northern pike, pickerel and tiger muskellunge run on exactly the same dates, which makes May 1 the real opening day of the New York season rather than a walleye-only event.

What to actually do

Fifteen inches and five a day statewide, but waters carry their own rules on top and the big walleye fisheries β€” Oneida, the St. Lawrence, Chautauqua β€” are worth checking individually. The April gap is the month to fish trout streams instead: they open April 1, exactly when walleye shuts.

The activity row in the calendar above is our own monthly curve for this species, and it is there to answer the question the dates cannot: whether the fish will be feeding when the season lets you fish. How walleye behave through the year is a separate page, about the fish rather than the paperwork.
