Trout Season in New York

The rule NYSDEC publishes for trout in New York, read on 2026-09-14, with the calendar underneath and what it means on the day.

New York trout streams open April 1 and close October 15 β€” and then stay open all winter as catch-and-release, which is the half of the rule most people never reach.

Why New York is different

From October 16 to March 31 inland streams remain fishable with artificial lures and nothing may be kept. Brook trout ponds close entirely over that window to protect wild, self-sustaining populations, while brown, rainbow and splake in lakes and ponds are open all year with no seasonal break at all. Three different answers for one word.

What to actually do

Five trout a day in the regular season, of which only two may be over twelve inches β€” a slot designed to spread the harvest rather than cap it. The winter catch-and-release season is the quiet secret of New York trout fishing: the water is legally open twelve months a year on most streams and almost nobody is on it in January.

The activity row in the calendar above is our own monthly curve for this species, and it is there to answer the question the dates cannot: whether the fish will be feeding when the season lets you fish. How rainbow trout behave through the year is a separate page, about the fish rather than the paperwork.
