Devil's Hole and beyond

The Lower Niagara funnels Lake Ontario's fish through a gorge of heavy, green water: steelhead and lake trout stack the drifts October through May, kings crash the fall, and the bite continues while every other river freezes. Boat drifts rule; shore anglers work Devil's Hole with respect for the current.

Drift-boat physics

The lower Niagara's power demands respect: guided drifts bounce three-way rigs with beads, minnows or MagLips through Devil's Hole and the Art Park runs. Steelhead, lakers (December's giants), browns and fall kings rotate through the same water: dress like the Arctic, expect the ocean.

The lower Niagara's winter drift is a Great Lakes institution: boats slip the gorge current bouncing egg sacs and beads along bottom for steelhead and lake trout, framed by frozen mist and 300-ft walls.
