The king factory

Lake Ontario's Chinook program built the East's premier big-fish troll: spring's brown-trout alleys along the south shore give way to summer king staging off the Niagara Bar, Olcott, and Oswego: 20-30-lb fish on flasher-fly rigs at the thermocline. August's pre-run stack is the derby season: the lake's charter fleet runs on it.

The brown trout alleys

April-May belongs to browns: stocked-and-grown fish to 20 lb cruising the warming shoreline mud lines in 8-20 ft. Small boats troll stickbaits on planer boards within sight of the beach: the year's most accessible trophy fishery, from Wilson to Sodus. Lake trout (the native deep program) and steelhead offshore round the spread all summer.

Tributary empire

When fall rains call, the lake empties into its rivers: the Salmon River's world-famous king run (September-October), steelhead following through winter, browns in every creek mouth. The lake-and-tributary system is one fishery: fish stage off river mouths weeks before running: trollers and drift anglers trade the same fish.

Reading the inland sea

Ontario fishes by temperature: find the thermocline and the bait, and the predators follow. Spring: warm shallows. Summer: 60-120-ft riggers offshore. The east end (Henderson Harbor, the islands) adds a legendary smallmouth fishery: 5-lb bronze over boulder shoals that would headline any other state.

Common questions

When do kings stage off the Salmon River?

August into early September off Oswego and Mexico Bay: the fleet intercepts them before the run. By mid-September the river fills and the drift-fishing spectacle begins.

Is Lake Ontario's brown trout fishery really world-class?

Spring surveys and 15-20-lb catches say yes: the south-shore alleys in April rival anywhere on earth for trophy browns from a small boat. Flat-lined stickbaits over 10 ft of stained water: simple and spectacular.
