A suburban reservoir

Geist Reservoir covers about 1,900 acres northeast of Indianapolis on Fall Creek, a water-supply lake ringed by dense residential development. Despite the setting it fishes well: largemouth bass relate to the thousands of docks, crappie stack the brush and structure, hybrid striped bass school in open water, and channel catfish work the flats.

The dock fishery defines Geist: skipping jigs, wacky rigs and small swimbaits under docks produces year-round, with spring pushing fish into the coves and creek arms. Riprap along the causeways and the dam holds fish as well. The lake is busy with recreational traffic in summer, which pushes serious anglers to dawn, dusk and weekdays.

Hybrids and crappie

Hybrid striped bass are stocked and school over the main lake chasing shad, providing hard-fighting action on slabs and swimbaits when located, best at dawn in summer and fall. Crappie hold the brush piles and dock structure at 8-20 feet, with spring and fall the productive windows. Catfish are reliable on cut bait through the warm months.

Public access is limited given the private shoreline: a public ramp serves the lake and marinas offer additional launching. Fishing pressure is significant. Fishers and Indianapolis surround the reservoir with full services. Because most of the shoreline is private, respect property and fish from the water where possible.
