The state’s oldest federal lake

Kanopolis floods 3,500 acres of the Smoky Hill River valley in central Kansas, the state’s first federal reservoir and still one of its most productive. The fishery leans toward hard-fighting open-water fish: wipers (hybrid stripers) that pull like freight trains, walleye and saugeye on the flats, white bass schooling by the thousands, plus channel and flathead catfish that grow large in the fertile prairie water.

The wiper fishery defines Kanopolis: watch for surface-feeding schools chasing shad across the open water from late spring through fall, and throw slabs, swimbaits and topwater into the melee. When they sound, vertical-jig the schools or troll deep crankbaits along the channel edges. White bass follow the same pattern and run the Smoky Hill River arm in spring: a March-April tradition for local anglers.

Walleye and cats

Walleye and saugeye stage on the rocky shorelines and dam riprap in spring, then move to the 10-18-foot flats for summer: crawler harnesses, slow trolling and jigging produce. Channel catfish are everywhere and reliable on cut bait and prepared baits; flatheads hold in the deeper channel structure and the timber near the river inflow, taking live bait at night through summer.

Kanopolis State Park manages ramps, campgrounds and shoreline access, with the Corps handling the rest. Wind is a constant on the Kansas plains: it stirs the water and turns fish on, but it also builds chop fast on a shallow lake: pick your shore and watch the forecast. Water clarity swings with wind and runoff. Salina sits 30 minutes away; Ellsworth is the local supply town.
