Big water, big history

Kentucky Lake is the largest artificial lake in the eastern US: 184 river-miles of the Tennessee backed up behind Kentucky Dam. It taught America ledge fishing: summer bass stack on the river channel drops by the hundred, and the offshore game was practically invented here. Asian carp pressured the fishery for a decade; aggressive removal work has the bass and crappie numbers climbing again.

The classic calendar

Spring crappie on stake beds and brush (the lake is a pilgrimage for it); post-spawn bass sliding out to the first ledges in May; summer schools on the deep channel bends (big cranks, hair jigs, 10-inch worms); fall shad migrations filling the bays. The Blood River and Jonathan Creek areas anchor the south end quality.

The Asian carp reckoning and rebound

Kentucky Lake's 2010s crappie-and-bass dip tracked the silver carp invasion, and the rebound tracks the fight against it: commercial removal and the barrier projects cut biomass, and recent year-classes of bass, crappie, and shad show it. The ledges are producing again, the stake-bed crappie culture never left, and the lake's sheer fertility remains: the giant is getting back up.
