The largest and deepest in the county

Minnesota DNR's 2009 aquatic vegetation survey calls Green Lake the largest lake in Kandiyohi County and in its watershed, at about 5,400 acres, and the deepest, at 110 feet. The lake is roughly round, about 3.5 miles across with about 12 miles of shoreline, and its mean depth is 27 feet. About a quarter of the basin is 10 feet deep or less, and the broadest shallows lie in the eastern half, where some bars reach more than a mile into the lake. It receives water from Nest Lake and drains to Calhoun Lake.

Clear, wind-swept water

The same DNR report describes Green Lake as mesotrophic with good water clarity; the average summer Secchi reading in 2008 was 11 feet. The lake is heavily wind-swept, which the DNR says limits rooted plants, and in 2009 muskgrass dominated the bottom to about 20 feet. Eurasian watermilfoil was found in the lake in 2000, and curly-leaf pondweed has also been recorded, so clean plants off your boat and trailer.
