A cypress oxbow

Eagle Lake lies north of Vicksburg in Warren County, Mississippi, an oxbow of the Mississippi River separated from the main channel by the mainline levee. Cypress trees line the shoreline and stand in the shallows, and the lake holds largemouth bass, crappie, bream, catfish and gar in classic Delta oxbow habitat.

Bass around the cypress

Largemouth relate to the cypress trunks and knees, the shoreline wood, the docks and any vegetation, taken on plastics pitched tight to cover, spinnerbaits along the edges and topwater at first and last light. The lake is shallow and the cover is obvious: the skill is in the presentation, not the finding.

Crappie and bream

Crappie hold the wood and brush and are best in spring around the spawn, taken on jigs and minnows around the trees and any brush piles. Bream fill the shallows through the warm months and are a Delta tradition on cane poles and light tackle. Catfish take cut bait in the deeper water.

Warren County logistics

Public and private ramps serve the lake, with camps and homes along parts of the shoreline and Vicksburg about 30 minutes south. Water levels are more stable than a connected oxbow but the lake still responds to rain and backwater. Summer heat pushes fishing to the very early and very late hours.
