A long Delta oxbow

Lake Washington covers roughly 5,000 acres in Washington County, Mississippi, a long curving oxbow of the Mississippi River separated from the main channel and lined with cypress and plantation land. It is one of the Delta’s classic fisheries, holding crappie, largemouth bass, bream, catfish and gar in fertile, shallow water.

Crappie first

Crappie are what Lake Washington is known for: they hold the cypress, the brush and any structure, and the spring bite around the spawn draws anglers from across the Delta. Jigs and minnows fished tight to the trees produce, with fall a second strong window. Fish can run to genuine size in this fertile water.

Bass and bream

Largemouth relate to the cypress trunks and knees, the shoreline wood and the vegetation, taken on plastics, spinnerbaits and topwater in low light. Bream fill the shallows through the warm months and are a Delta tradition on light tackle. Catfish take bottom baits in the deeper water through the summer.

Washington County logistics
