The comeback

Buckeye: Ohio's oldest state park lake, born a canal feeder in 1826: nearly died when its earthen dam failed inspection in 2014: years of drawdown followed. The rebuilt dam (2018) refilled the lake and ODNR restocked aggressively: today's fishery: saugeye, crappie, bass among fresh structure: rides a young-water boom on two centuries of character.

Saugeye water

The stocked saugeye (walleye-sauger hybrids built for shallow stained lakes) anchor the fishery: jigs and blade baits on the roadbeds and dredged channels, trolled cranks across the 6-10-ft flats, and a serious night bite along the shoreline rocks in spring and fall. Winter's open-water window (saugeye feed shallow before ice) is the local specialty.

Canal-lake panfish

Crappie stack the docks, channels and planted structure (the rebuild sank fresh cribs): bluegill fill the lily pads: and channel cats cruise everywhere on summer nights. The historic canal channels (deeper threads through the shallow bowl) organize everything: fish their edges in every season.

Flat-water practicalities

Nowhere is deep: wind stirs the whole lake fast, and summer algae blooms shift the bite windows: dawn beats midday from July on. State-park ramps ring the shore (Liebs Island the flagship): the North Shore's rebuilt boardwalk anchors bank access. Ice years village the lake: saugeye through first ice is the prize.
