A creek in a canyon

Pine Creek flows about 87 miles through north-central Pennsylvania, cutting the gorge known as the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon: a thousand feet deep and fifty miles long through the Tioga State Forest. Trout hold the upper creek and the cold tributaries; the gorge and lower creek warm into smallmouth water through the summer.

The upper creek and its tributaries, including Slate Run and Cedar Run, hold wild brown and brook trout in genuinely good water: Slate Run in particular is a Pennsylvania fly-fishing landmark. The gorge itself is stocked and holds trout in spring before warming; from summer on, smallmouth take over through the lower creek.

Floating the gorge

Canoe and kayak floats through the gorge are the classic trip, best in spring when flows allow, with the Pine Creek Rail Trail paralleling the water for 62 miles and providing bike-in access to reaches roads do not reach. Late summer often drops the creek too low to float, favoring wading.

Tioga County logistics

Access is via Route 6, the rail trail and forest roads, with Wellsboro, Blackwell and Slate Run the base points. Leonard Harrison and Colton Point state parks provide the famous canyon overlooks. Flows drop through summer: check the Cedar Run gauge before planning a float.
