Fishing Waubay Lake: the full guide

The lake that grew

Waubay rode the 1990s wet cycle from 6,000 to 15,000-plus acres: drowning farmsteads and shelterbelts into a flooded-timber walleye factory. The Glacial Lakes region's rises built fisheries overnight: Waubay is the flagship: submerged groves full of fish, roads that end underwater, and navigation that rewards local knowledge.

Walleye in the trees

The flooded shelterbelts and township-road grades are the structure: jig the tree lines at ice-out, pull harnesses along the old field edges in summer, and pitch cranks to windward timber all fall. The fish run fat on freshwater shrimp and perch: South Dakota limits fill legitimately here when the bite is on.

Jumbo perch heritage

Waubay's perch made it famous before the walleye boom: 12-14-inch jumbos through the ice, wheelhouse cities over the mud basins, and February derbies that double the county's population. The cycles swing with year-classes: when the perch are in, the Glacial Lakes winter revolves around this ice.
