A prairie glacial lake

Lake Poinsett covers about 7,900 acres in Hamlin and Brookings counties, one of the largest natural lakes in eastern South Dakota, formed by glacial action and typical of the prairie pothole country. It is shallow and fertile, holding walleye, yellow perch, northern pike, white bass, smallmouth bass and panfish.

Walleye and perch

Walleye relate to the rock reefs, the drop-offs and the wind-blown shorelines, taken on jigs, slip bobbers and crawler harnesses through the open-water season. Yellow perch are abundant and provide both summer and winter fishing. Wind is a defining factor here: it stirs the shallow water and positions fish predictably.
