A power-plant lake

Squaw Creek Reservoir covers 3,200 acres southwest of Fort Worth, built to cool the Comanche Peak nuclear plant. The warm discharge keeps water temperatures elevated year-round, which changes the fishery’s calendar entirely: bass spawn earlier than anywhere else in the region, and winter fishing can be excellent while nearby lakes are cold and slow.

An early calendar

The heated water pulls the spawn forward, often into January and February: while anglers elsewhere in Texas are fishing deep and slow, Squaw Creek bass are moving shallow. Work the coves, points and any cover with jerkbaits, plastics and moving baits in the cool months. Summer, conversely, gets very warm: fish deep or fish at night.
