The Roanoke impoundment

Smith Mountain Lake spreads 20,600 acres across the Roanoke and Blackwater river valleys in the Virginia foothills, with 500 miles of shoreline folded into coves and creek arms. It is best known for striped bass: a stocked, thriving population that produces fish past forty pounds: but the lake also carries largemouth and smallmouth, a growing muskie fishery, crappie in the brush and enough catfish to keep the bank anglers busy. Blue Ridge scenery frames all of it.

Striper seasons

Winter and early spring find stripers deep and schooled: down-lined live gizzard shad over the main-lake points and creek channel edges at 25-50 feet is the standard program. Spring pushes them up the Roanoke and Blackwater arms chasing herring: free-lined baits and topwater at first light. Summer sends them deep again to the thermocline, and fall brings the surface blitzes that make anglers forget every other species: keep a big walking bait rigged from September through November.

Bass and the rest

Largemouth work the docks and blowdowns in the coves: skipping jigs and wacky worms produces year-round, and the lake hosts national tournaments on the strength of it. Smallmouth prefer the rocky main-lake points and bluff transitions. Muskie stocking has built a legitimate fishery in the upper Blackwater arm, and crappie stack the deeper brush piles: spring and fall are their windows.

Working a busy lake

Public ramps at Smith Mountain Lake State Park, Anthony Ford and Hales Ford serve the main basin; marinas dot the shoreline. Summer weekends bring heavy pleasure-boat traffic to the open water: fish the creek arms, dawn or dusk, or shift to fall when the lake belongs to fishermen again.
