A shallow lake on the plains

Ocean Lake covers about 6,000 acres in the Wind River basin west of Riverton, a shallow, wind-swept irrigation lake surrounded by wildlife habitat. It averages only a few feet deep, warms fast and grows fish accordingly: walleye, yellow perch, ling, crappie and channel catfish, with a wildlife management area protecting much of the shoreline.

Walleye and perch

Walleye hold the flats, points and any structure, taking jigs and crawler harnesses with wind-blown shorelines the productive water. Yellow perch school in numbers and support both open-water and a busy winter ice fishery. The shallowness means the whole lake is fishable but also that wind stirs it turbid quickly.

Ice and the seasons

Winter ice fishing is a Wyoming tradition here, with perch and walleye drawing anglers across the basin. Spring after ice-out and fall are the strongest open-water windows: summer heat and persistent wind make midday fishing hard. The lake is managed for both fishing and waterfowl habitat.
