A river with its own trout

The Snake River flows out of Jackson Lake through Jackson Hole beneath the Teton Range, and it holds a trout found nowhere else: the Snake River fine-spotted cutthroat, a distinct form covered in small dense spots. That fish is the reason anglers come, alongside mountain whitefish and, in places, rainbows and browns that have been introduced elsewhere in the drainage.

Cutthroat on dries

The fine-spotted cutthroat rise willingly to attractor dries through summer: the river fishes as a classic western float with big foam patterns, hoppers and stoneflies worked along the banks, braids and log jams. Fish average solid and the takes are unhurried, which makes it a superb river for anglers newer to dry-fly fishing.

Flows and the season

Releases from Jackson Lake Dam plus snowmelt govern the river: it runs high into early summer, then settles into prime float conditions from July through September. The braided channels shift constantly with each high water, so knowledge ages quickly and guides earn their fees. Fall brings streamer fishing and fewer boats.
