The headline act on most American reservoirs. Relates to cover: docks, brush, grass edges and points. Topwater at first light on points and seawalls, then slide out to 12-25 ft brush and points with a Carolina rig, deep crank or drop shot. The bite is dawn, dusk or deep.

Crappie illustration

Crappie

Brush piles, bridge pilings and standing timber. The fish fry favorite. Straight down on bridge pilings and deep brush at 15-25 ft. Minnows outfish jigs in hot water; move until the graph shows them stacked.

Fishing Greers Ferry Lake: the full guide

Two fisheries in one stop

Greers Ferry pools 40,000 clear Ozark acres famous for hard-fighting hybrids and a genuine walleye run up the Little Red and Devils Fork each March. Below the dam, the Little Red tailwater produced the former world-record brown trout (40 lb 4 oz): lake by day, trophy trout river by evening.

The lake game

Hybrid schools roam open water over the channel: slabs and live shad when the graph lights up, topwater blitzes at dawn in summer. Crappie hold on planted brush; bass fish the bluff ends and points with finesse gear in the clear water. The walleye run in early spring is short and worth planning around.

Common questions

Where does the world-record brown fit in?

Below the dam: the Little Red's 40 lb 4 oz brown (1992) came from the tailwater this lake feeds. Lake trip, river dessert: JFK access serves both.
