The reach
The Bega at Bega is the far south coast river at the dairy town, fresh and gravelly above the town where the Brogo and the Bemboka join, tidal below it through the flats to Mogareeka and the sea at Tathra, with the town bridge, river parks and the old wharf reaches in between. It is bass water above and bream water below, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Bega supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Australian bass fish the fresh reaches and the snags at the tidal limit from spring to autumn, closed in the river from 1 May to 31 August under the New South Wales rule computed on the species card; bream and estuary perch fish the tidal reaches through the year; flathead lie on the sand of the lower river in summer; mulloway are the night fish toward the mouth; and carp are in the fresh reaches under the DPIRD rules. Where to fish it
The river parks and the bridge give bank access at the town, the crossings above give the fresh reaches, and a kayak covers the tidal river downstream toward Mogareeka; the snags and the rock walls at the tidal limit are the bass water, and the deep bends below the town hold the bream and the perch. Tathra at the mouth has its own coast.
