The Bogan at Gongolgon
Gongolgon is the old crossing on the lower Bogan River south of Brewarrina, in remote plains country where the river winds between coolibah and black box on its last reach toward the Darling. The Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Gongolgon supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page. The Bogan at Nyngan has its own page.
Species and seasons
Golden perch are the everyday fish of the lower Bogan when it runs, with Murray cod in the deeper holes; freshwater catfish are protected west of the Divide. The New South Wales Murray cod closure, 1 September to 30 November, applies; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The crossing at Gongolgon is the access, and the river is fished from the bank in the holes near it; the surrounding land is station country.

Brewarrina, to the north, is the nearest town with supplies. Carry fuel, food and water, and check the roads, which close after rain.
The river through the year
The lower Bogan is a river that often stops. Its flows come from rain on the central-west slopes around Peak Hill and Tottenham, far upstream, and in dry years the reach at Gongolgon shrinks to waterholes that can go weeks or months without a flow; after good rain it runs, rises and joins the Darling above Bourke. Golden perch feed hardest when a fresh arrives in the warm months, and cod keep to the deepest holes and the timber whatever the level. With no dam upstream to hold it steady, the chart here is the river’s natural pulse, and a rising line after a dry spell is the moment to fish. The plains around it are remote: carry water and plan for roads that close after rain.
