The Bogan at Nyngan
Nyngan is the western town on the Bogan River, the river that nearly drowned the town in the 1990 flood, winding north under river red gums and coolibah across the plains toward the Darling. Species and seasons
Golden perch are the fish most anglers catch in the Bogan, with Murray cod in the deeper holes and the snags; carp are common, and freshwater catfish are protected west of the Divide. The New South Wales Murray cod closure, 1 September to 30 November, applies; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The weir and the riverside reserves in Nyngan give bank access to the Bogan, and the crossings up and downstream reach the quieter reaches.
Planning a visit
Nyngan is on the Mitchell and Barrier highways, with supplies and accommodation. Bring bait for yellowbelly and a few cod lures, and fish early in the summer heat.
The river through the year
The Bogan has no big dam, so its level follows the rain on the central west: long, quiet spells when it runs low between the red gums and holds its fish in the deeper holes, and floods when heavy rain falls on the slopes upstream, as it did so dramatically in April 1990 when the river broke through the town’s levee. Golden perch are most active on a rising river in the warm months; cod stay in the timber and the deep holes. In the long dry spells the water clears and warms, and early mornings and evenings are the times to fish. The river reserves around Nyngan are shaded, and the weir pool near the town holds water when the river is low.
