The Camden Haven at Kendall
Kendall is the village on the Camden Haven River inland from Laurieton, where the river runs fresh through farmland and forest under the Comboyne plateau before it opens into Queens Lake and the Camden Haven inlet. Species and seasons
Australian bass are the fish of the fresh Camden Haven River around Kendall, under the overhanging trees and around the snags on surface lures and spinners from spring to autumn; bream and estuary perch hold in the tidal water below. The New South Wales river closure for bass and estuary perch, 1 May to 31 August, applies; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The riverside reserve at Kendall and the crossings upstream give bank access, and a kayak covers the snag-lined reaches toward the tidal limit.
Planning a visit
Kendall is off the Pacific Highway between Port Macquarie and Taree, with a store and cafes, and Laurieton has more. Bring light bass gear and a kayak.
The river through the year
The Camden Haven River runs off the Comboyne plateau, and heavy rain there brings quick rises at Kendall; between them it is a clear, slow river of pools under the trees. Its bass move down to Queens Lake and the brackish water in winter to spawn, the reason for the New South Wales closure from 1 May to 31 August, and return in spring. From late spring to autumn they feed in the snags and along the shaded banks, most of all on summer evenings. A kayak launched in the village covers the fresh reach.
