Yellowfin bream on the east coast, black bream in the southern estuaries. Structure fish: rock walls, jetty piles, oyster racks, snags and pontoons. The river
The Clyde River rises in the escarpment behind Batemans Bay and runs through a forested valley to the sea at the bay, tidal for tens of kilometres up past Nelligen and Shallow Crossing, with oyster leases along its lower reaches, deep holes and rock bars in its middle ones and snags and rapids in its upper, all inside a catchment with almost no farming, which is why the water is as clear as it is. Batemans Bay has its own page for the bay and the town; this one is scored for the river and reads its reaches first. The whole river sits inside the Batemans Marine Park.
Species and seasons
Bream are the Clyde’s fish, all year on the leases, the snags and the rock walls, with the biggest in the cooler months and a run to the bay in winter; flathead lie on the sand of the lower river and the flats from spring to autumn; estuary perch hold in the middle reaches and feed at dusk; and mulloway are the night fish of the bridge, the deep holes and the bay mouth. Whiting fish the lower flats in summer, luderick the walls in winter, and bass hold in the fresh reaches above the tide with the NSW river closed season for bass to check.
