The reach
The Deua at Wamban is the river above Moruya where it leaves the Deua wilderness and runs through the valley’s flats to become the Moruya River at the tidal limit, clear and gravelly over pools and rapids, with the Wamban crossing, the reserves and the forest tracks that reach the gorges above. It is bass water of the south coast kind, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Wamban supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page. Moruya, on the tidal river, has its own coast.
Species and seasons
Australian bass are the fish, in the pools and the snags from spring to autumn on surface lures at dusk and plastics by day, closed in the river from 1 May to 31 August under the New South Wales rule computed on the species card; estuary perch push up to the tidal limit; eel-tailed catfish are in the pools; and the Moruya below gives bream, flathead and mulloway. Carp rarely reach the pools this high.
Where to fish it
The crossing and the reserves give bank access to the pools, a canoe or a kayak covers the reach downstream toward the tidal limit, and the forest tracks into the wilderness reach the gorge pools on foot; the snags and the rock walls at the heads of the pools are the bass water. Dusk is the bass hour, and the gorges are for the fit.
