The giant of the inland rivers and the big lakes (Hume, Mulwala, Eildon). A snag fish that eats big lures, and a species with a closed season across the Murray-Darling. Slow it down: heavier spinnerbaits, slow-rolled swimbaits and bait on the bottom next to the deep snags.

Best: November to April
Yellowbelly. The bread-and-butter native of the Murray-Darling lakes and rivers; loves warm water, structure and a lure worked slowly past its nose. Slower. Work the deeper timber and the drop-offs with vibes and bait.

The Edward at Moulamein
Moulamein, which calls itself the oldest town in the Riverina, stands on the lower Edward River where it winds west through black box and red gum country toward its junction with the Wakool and the Murray. It is a quiet river town with a historic wharf and riverside camping. The Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Moulamein supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page. Species and seasons
Murray cod and golden perch are the fish of the lower Edward: cod in the snags and the deeper holes on lures and bait, yellowbelly on shrimp and worms through the warm months; carp are common, and silver perch and freshwater catfish are protected. Murray cod are closed from 1 September to 30 November in New South Wales; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The old wharf area and the reserves along the river in Moulamein give bank access, and the reaches up and downstream are reached from the camping spots along the river roads. A kayak covers the snag-lined bends that the bank cannot reach.
Planning a visit
Moulamein is on the road between Balranald and Deniliquin, with a pub, a store and camping by the river, and Swan Hill is the nearest larger town. Bring cod lures and bait for yellowbelly, plenty of water, and a plan for the heat in summer.
