The Edward at Deniliquin
The Edward River leaves the Murray in the Barmah-Millewa forest and winds west across the Riverina as the river’s great anabranch, through Deniliquin, the town of the southern Riverina, under river red gums and past sandy beaches that fill with campers in summer. Species and seasons
Murray cod are the reason anglers come to the Edward, holding in the red gum snags and the deep outside bends, taken on spinnerbaits, hardbodies and bait; golden perch, yellowbelly, are the warm-weather fish on shrimp and worms; silver perch are protected in New South Wales rivers and freshwater catfish are protected west of the Divide. The New South Wales Murray cod closure, 1 September to 30 November, applies; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The beaches and reserves along the Edward in and around Deniliquin, including McLean Beach, give bank access to the snags, and the ramps put a boat or a kayak onto the river to work the timber upstream and down. The snag piles on the outside bends hold the cod; yellowbelly feed along the slower edges on summer evenings.
