The Loddon at Kerang
Kerang is the northern Victorian town on the lower Loddon River, near the chain of lakes and wetlands of the Kerang district and not far from the Murray, where the river winds between red gums across the flat irrigation country. The Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Kerang supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page. The Loddon at Bridgewater and Newstead have their own pages.
Species and seasons
Murray cod and golden perch are the fish of the Loddon at Kerang, in the snags and the deeper holes on lures and bait; redfin and carp are common. The Loddon is north of the Great Dividing Range and not on the VFA’s exempt list, so the Murray cod closed season, 1 September to 30 November, applies; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The riverside reserves in Kerang give bank access to the Loddon, and the weir pool near the town holds water through the summer. The nearby lakes are separate waters with their own rules. The weir pool and the reaches just below it hold the most water in a dry summer, and the fallen red gums along the outside bends are the cod water; yellowbelly take shrimp fished close to the timber. A kayak reaches the snags that the bank cannot.

Kerang is on the Murray Valley Highway in northern Victoria, with supplies, accommodation and the lakes of the district close by. Bring cod lures, bait for yellowbelly and redfin, and water for the northern summer; the river is closed for cod in spring.
