The Macquarie at Warren
Warren is the town on the Macquarie River north-west of Dubbo, the last town before the river spreads into the Macquarie Marshes, a river of river red gum and coolibah across the cotton and grazing plains. The Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Warren has not reported recent readings to Water Data Online, so this page carries no level chart. The Macquarie at Dubbo and Wellington have their own pages.
Species and seasons
Murray cod and golden perch are the fish of the Macquarie at Warren: cod in the log jams and the deeper holes, yellowbelly on shrimp and worms in the warm months; carp are common and freshwater catfish are protected in rivers west of the Divide. The New South Wales Murray cod closure, 1 September to 30 November, applies; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The weir and the riverside reserves at Warren give bank access, and the reaches up and downstream are reached from the crossings and the travelling stock routes. The Marshes downstream are a nature reserve with their own rules. The snags below the weir are the local cod spot.

Warren is on the Oxley Highway north-west of Dubbo, with a caravan park, supplies and the riverside reserves. Bring cod lures and bait for yellowbelly, and water for the western summer; the Macquarie Marshes to the north are a nature reserve worth the drive for the birdlife.
