The Nymboida at Nymboida
Nymboida is the small village on the Nymboida River west of Grafton, where the river runs clear through the hills in rapids and long pools on its way to the Mann and the Clarence, a river known for whitewater paddling. Like the upper Clarence, it is eastern freshwater cod country. The Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Nymboida supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Australian bass are the fish anglers target in the Nymboida, along the rock bars and under the overhanging trees, on surface lures and small hardbodies from spring to autumn. Eastern freshwater cod are protected and must be released. The New South Wales closure for bass in rivers, 1 May to 31 August, applies; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The crossings and the camping areas along the Nymboida give access to the pools, and a canoe or kayak is the way to fish between the rapids. The river is a paddling destination, so fish early or late on busy days.
Planning a visit
Grafton, to the east, has supplies and tackle, and the Nymboida camping areas are a short drive up the Armidale road. Bring light bass gear and a canoe.
The river through the year
The Nymboida drains the ranges west of Coffs Harbour, and it rises quickly after heavy rain and falls back within days, which is why the whitewater paddlers watch its level as closely as the anglers do. Its bass move downstream to the Clarence estuary to spawn in winter, the reason for the New South Wales closure from 1 May to 31 August, and return in spring. Through summer and autumn they feed along the rock bars and under the overhanging trees. The river is clear between rises.
