Year-round; summer and autumn in the estuaries, winter at the mouths
Yellowfin bream on the east coast, black bream in the southern estuaries. Structure fish: rock walls, jetty piles, oyster racks, snags and pontoons. Slow the retrieve right down: blades and lightly weighted plastics along the deeper rock walls and drop-offs, or unweighted bait drifted into the snags.
Flathead
Best: November to April
Dusky flathead in the eastern estuaries, sand flathead in the southern bays. An ambush predator lying on sand and mud edges waiting for whatever the tide brings. Fish the deeper channels and the last of the run-out; slower hops with a heavier jighead, and a bait on the bottom as back-up.

Tuross Head and its lakes
Tuross Head is a village on a headland between two lakes on the New South Wales far south coast: Tuross Lake to the south, the big, sandy estuary of the Tuross River that opens to the sea over a bar, and Coila Lake to the north, a shallow coastal lake that opens only when it fills. The village has boat sheds, jetties and a foreshore on the Tuross side, beaches either side of the headland and the rocks of the head itself. It is a flathead and bream place first, inside the Batemans Marine Park, and the report on this page is scored for the village’s coordinates.
Species and seasons
Flathead are the lake’s fish, on the sand flats and the drop-offs from spring to autumn and the reason most people come; bream fish the leases, the snags and the jetties all year with the winter run to the bar; whiting work the flats and the beaches in summer; and mulloway are the night fish of the bar and the deeper holes. Luderick fish the rocks and the bar in winter, tailor and salmon run the beaches and the headland in the cooler months, squid work the weed near the bar, and Coila Lake gives bream and flathead when it is open and prawns on the dark nights of summer.
