The reach
The Tuross at Eurobodalla is the river above Tuross Lake, running out of the Deua and Wadbilliga wilderness through the dairy flats of the Eurobodalla valley over gravel bars, pools and rapids, with the village crossing, the reserves and the forest tracks that reach the upper river. It is bass water of the wild kind, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Eurobodalla supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page. Tuross Head, at the mouth, has its own page.
Species and seasons
Australian bass are the fish, in the pools and the snags from spring to autumn on surface lures at dusk and plastics by day, closed in the river from 1 May to 31 August under the New South Wales rule computed on the species card; estuary perch push up to the tidal limit; eel-tailed catfish are in the pools; and the tidal river below gives bream and flathead. Carp are few this far up.
Where to fish it
The village crossing and the reserves give bank access to the pools, a canoe or a kayak covers the reach downstream toward the tidal limit, and the forest tracks into the wilderness reach the upper pools on foot; the snags and the rock walls at the heads of the pools are the bass water. Dusk under the casuarinas is the bass hour.
