Year-round; summer and autumn in the estuaries, winter at the mouths
Yellowfin bream on the east coast, black bream in the southern estuaries. Structure fish: rock walls, jetty piles, oyster racks, snags and pontoons. Slow the retrieve right down: blades and lightly weighted plastics along the deeper rock walls and drop-offs, or unweighted bait drifted into the snags.

Best: November to April
Dusky flathead in the eastern estuaries, sand flathead in the southern bays. An ambush predator lying on sand and mud edges waiting for whatever the tide brings. Fish the deeper channels and the last of the run-out; slower hops with a heavier jighead, and a bait on the bottom as back-up.

Tweed Heads and the river
Tweed Heads is the northernmost town of New South Wales, on the Tweed River at the Queensland border, joined to Coolangatta across the state line. The river is the fishery: a long tidal estuary with rock walls, sand flats, deep holes and the islands of the lower reaches, opening to the sea between two breakwalls over a bar, with the beaches of the Gold Coast to the north and Kingscliff and Cabarita to the south. Point Danger and Fingal Head give the rock platforms.
Species by season
Bream and flathead are the river’s fish, the bream on the walls, the leases and the snags all year with the winter run to the mouth, the flathead on the flats and the drop-offs from spring to autumn; whiting fish the flats and the beaches in summer; mangrove jack push into the snags through the warm months; and mulloway are the night fish of the walls and the holes. Tailor run the beaches and the walls in the cooler months, luderick the walls in winter, and Point Danger and Fingal give trevally, tailor and the pelagics of summer to the rock anglers, with snapper on the reefs in winter for the boats.
