The reach
The Coomera at Witheren is the fresh river of the Gold Coast hinterland below the Lamington ranges, running through the Coomera valley’s farms over rock, gravel and pools toward Canungra and the tidal river at Oxenford, with the Witheren crossing, the reserves and the valley road. It is bass water in a green valley, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Witheren supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page. The tidal Coomera at the Gold Coast is a different fishery.
Species and seasons
Australian bass fish the pools, the snags and the rock from spring to autumn on surface lures at dusk and plastics by day, under the state’s bass rules for the fresh reaches; eel-tailed catfish and spangled perch are in the pools; and the clear water and rock make it a lure fishery. Carp are few.
Where to fish it
The Witheren crossing and the reserves give bank access to the pools, the valley road crossings upstream toward the ranges give the rock reaches, and a kayak covers the pools downstream toward Canungra; the pool heads and the snags are the bass water. The last hour of light is when the Coomera bass feed.
Reading the report

Below Witheren the Coomera runs through Canungra, the army town under the ranges, and then through the Coomera Gorge in the Lamington foothills before it reaches the tidal river at Oxenford; the gorge reaches are a walk-in bass fishery for the fit, the Canungra reach fishes from the town’s reserves, and the tidal Coomera at the Gold Coast is a different fishery again.
